The History of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Estates and Art

                               Château Mouton Rothschild

A classified First Growth, Château Mouton Rothschild spans 90 hectares (222 acres) of vines
at Pauillac, in the Médoc. Its history is that of a magical encounter between a terroir and a
man, the legendary Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902-1988).
After a first initiative, ahead of its time, with the poster artist Jean Carlu in 1924, Baron
Philippe waited until 1945 to finally establish a tradition that would henceforth become the
                               visual hallmark of Mouton Rothschild.
From one label to another, Mouton Rothschild has thus brought together some of the most
celebrated artists of their day, including Miró, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Tàpies, Francis
Bacon, Dali, Balthus, Jeff Koons and even Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. The artists
have complete freedom of creation, though certain themes, such as the vine, the pleasure of
drinking and the ram, the Mouton Rothschild emblem, have proved a particularly rich source
         Leading American Jeff Koons

                                                                    Château d'Armailhac

For the Baron, this was an important purchase as Chateau d’Armailhac was located right
next to Chateau Mouton Rothschild. This purchase allowed Mouton Rothschild to
expand their holdings in Pauillac. As part of the deal, Count Ferrand was allowed to
remain in residence at Chateau d’Armailhac for the rest of his life, rent free. In
reciprocity, Baron Philippe Rothschild also took over the Bordeaux trading arm of
Chateau d’Armailhac, which allowed the Baron to begin producing and marketing this
                                                           first branded wine, Mouton Cadet.

A legendary terroir, prestigious neighbours, a providential encounter: accounts for the
history and the success of Château Clerc Milon. The terroir is that of Pauillac, where some
of the world’s finest wines are made. The neighbours are Mouton and Lafite, illustrious
First Growths whose nearby vines can be seen from the terrace of the Château. The
encounter was with Baron Philippe, who in 1970 acquired the then badly neglected estate
and decided to restore it to its status as a Classified Growth.
From 1985 onwards the label displays decorative work by 17th century German
goldsmiths, a pair of dancers made of precious stones.
