Well, I’m going to talk about the news regarding legalizing same-sex marriage in
the US in June 2015.
This was huge news for the LGBT community and it was broadcast on all types of
media ranging from television to social networks on the internet. Personally, I heard
the news on the radio whilst I was driving home one evening.
Basically, the United States’ Supreme Court ruled that the refusal to recognize
same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and that there should be no legal restriction
against marrying another person, whatever his or her gender.
I think this was good news for several reasons. Firstly, it is undeniable that the
LGBT community has been growing fast in recent years. Despite cruel
discrimination from some “straight” people, these minorities still fight for their
right to be treated equally. Secondly, it was good news because it will change the
lives of many individuals. I myself have a gay friend and he is just like other guys,
the only difference is that he is not attracted to females. He has a great personality,
and he is brilliant and funny. However, he always thinks that being gay is
unfortunate. He thinks that if he comes out, nobody will befriend him or they will
stay away from him and he will eventually die alone. As a result, the news of
legalizing same-sex marriage in the US has encouraged people like my friend to be
more confident in themselves and this news gives them the courage to live proudly
as who they are. Although it’s going to take a long time for the Vietnamese people
to accept this concept, I strongly believe that in the end, our society will gradually
learn to appreciate that each individual has a unique personality and we should
embrace our differences.
