HISTORY OF
THE BLANTYRE
42.195 KM RACE
The Blantyre 42.195-kilometre race was introduced in the early 90s and was being organized
under the name “NICO BLANTYRE CITY MARATHON” after its initial sponsor and
the competition run up to 2006. In 2018, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) reintro-
duced the competition under the Name “BLANTYRE MARATHON” with the aim of
promoting long distance running and the sport code of athletics in Malawi.
The competition has seen over 243 marathoners competing over the 3-year period since
MNCS started hosting the event. Henry Moyo is the record holder in the competition after he
ran the race in 2:18:18 in 2002. Additional sporting activities such as aerobics, fun run and relay
races were added to the competition to add variety, increase participation, create fun among
the participants as well as to act as a recreation factor.
