12. Procedure: Directions
Objectives of the Unit
Upon completion of this unit, you are expected to be able to:
1. Understand a direction text with the appropriate generic structure (orientation,
events, re-orientation);
2. Identify social functions, text structures, and language elements of a direction text
and how it should be used in context;
3. Write a direction text by using appropriate generic structure and language features.
Preparing Before Reading
In this unit, you will be given some information about a direction text. This non-fiction
text gives important information in a systematic order to tell readers how to reach a certain
place. Without reading the text in sequence, readers may find it illogical.
A direction text may be complicated or simple; it depends on various ways of reaching a
certain place. The language features of this text are (1) present tense or future tense is
used. (2) as this is supposed for the readers themselves, the pronoun ‘you’ may be used or
the imperative sentences are provided. (3) There are some connectors showing the order of
the steps used. (4) The sentences used are simple and straightforward; they are just easy to
understand.
