C. Grammar
Now, look at the grammatical features. The first feature is the use of the Past Tense. Read
the first paragraph. Is the Past Tense used in it?
A woman was more than surprised when she came home and discovered a group
of builders in her house doing renovations in her kitchen. She had no renovations
planned, and even stranger still, a similar occurrence happened the previous year,
when builders appeared in her garden to undertake work unannounced. [1]
Yes, the words highlighted in blue indicate the use of the Past Tense.
Now, find the Past Tense in the other paragraphs and write them in the spaces provided.

The second language feature is the use of adjectives, adverbs, and facts and figures. Are
there any adjectives in the first paragraph? Yes, there are three of them. They are
highlighted in green. What about adverbs? There are no such adverbs as “firstly”, “next”,
“then” and “finally”, but the words in yellow refer to something that happened the year
before. And what about facts and figures? Are they any? There are no figures mentioned in
the passage, but obviously there are many facts in it. “The builders did the renovations”, “a
similar occurrence happened in the previous year” are all facts.
