10. Procedure: Manual
Objectives of the Unit
Upon completion of this unit, you are expected to be able to:
1. write a manual text with the appropriate generic structure;
2. use grammar appropriately in a manual text;
3. use adjectives appropriately in a manual text.
Prepare Before Reading
In this unit you will learn about manual text. Do you know what is manual text? Manual
text is the types of procedure text that have purpose to tell reader how to operate
something. You can find the manual.
Procedure text, in general, have three generic structures. The first part is goal. This part
describes the purpose of doing/operate something. For instance, ‘How to operate Camera’.
Usually, the goal is written along with the introduction in the text. The second part is
material/equipment that contains of the materials/equipments in a process of
doing/operating something. The last part is steps. It is containing of the instruction
doing/operating something. The language feature of procedure text can be seen below:
1. Using simple present tense.
Procedure text uses simple present tense because in this text there are facts sentences
regarding the making or use of something.
2. Imperative Sentence.
The imperative sentence begins with the verb. For example, heat, mix, add, plug in, etc.
3. Connectives.
This word is a link between one sentence and another. For example, firstly, secondly,
finally, etc.
4. Adverbs used to provide time and method information. For example, in 10 minutes,
slowly, etc.
