Universities and academic institutions in Malaysia also play an important role
in interfaith dialogue. The Faculty of Islamic Studies at the National University of
Malaysia (UKM), the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences
at the International Islamic University Malaysia, and the Center for Civilisational
Dialogue at the University of Malaya are examples of academic centers actively
involved in fostering interfaith discussions and research. These institutions host
interfaith programs, conferences, and lectures that engage students and academics in
meaningful dialogue on religious and cultural topics.
Government Agencies and Statutory Bodies
Government agencies such as JPNIN and JAKIM, along with state-level religious
authorities and statutory bodies like the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development
Foundation (YaPEIM), also organise interfaith dialogues. These agencies facilitate
discussions between religious leaders and academics to address sensitive issues
concerning religion and national unity.
One of the key initiatives was the creation of the JKMPKA in 2010, later
succeeded by the Harmony Between Religious Believers Committee (HARMONI)
committee in 2020, to coordinate and formalise interfaith dialogue efforts across
the country. It is then followed by establishment of The National Unity Advisory
Council (MPPN) in 2023 to advise the government on issues related to national
