Interfaith Dialogue in Malaysia
Interfaith dialogue in Malaysia has evolved over centuries, shaped
by historical trade routes, colonial policies, and governmental
initiatives. From the early exchanges between civilisations in the
Malay Archipelago to modern-day interfaith engagement, Malaysia
has long been a meeting ground for diverse cultures and religions.

Early History of Interfaith Relations
nterfaith dialogue in Malaysia dates back to the 2nd
I century, during a time when the Malay Archipelago was
a crucial hub for international trade. India, as one of the earliest
civilisations, established connections with the Malay world,
particularly significant during the 15th century with the founding
of Malacca as a major trading port. Over time, the region became
a meeting point for traders and merchants from various ethnicities
and religions, including the arrival of Chinese and Indian
immigrants, which greatly influenced the multicultural society of
Malaysia.
The period of colonisation by the Portuguese, Dutch, and
British beginning in 1511 further contributed to the pluralistic
society we see today. These interactions laid the foundation for the
diverse religious and cultural landscape that would characterise
Malaysia’s development.
Colonial Policies and Segregation
Despite the early cultural interactions, the British colonial
rule, particularly the‘divine and rule’policies of the late 18th
