P. 22
Having sat under the pipal tree [Bodhi Tree] in his ultimate stage of seeking enlightenment, he gradually
passed through the four stages of meditative absorption (jhana), contemplated the links of dependent
origination through his previous lives, and eventually realized the four noble truths.
The pipal tree where ascetic Siddhartha Gautama’s gained enlightenment became known as the Bodhi Tree.
Bodhi refers to awakening. And thus the place associated with Buddha’s awakening is called Bodhi Gaya or
Bodh Gaya. The ascetic was then called Gautama the Buddha, hence Gautama Buddha.
Bodh Gaya is the key pinnacle site for all buddhist worldwide, where Buddhism started.
