■ The protoplast is surrounded by a delicate membrane (the plasma membrane) and
include two major components (the cytoplasm and the nucleus).

■ When the nucleus is removed from a cell, the isolated nucleus cannot function unless it
is transferred again to the cytoplasm.

 A cytoplasm without a nucleus can live and function to a long time before it dies.
