Pharmacological effects of flavonoids:
➢ Decrease of capillary fragility so reduce capillary bleeding, e.g. rutin,
hesperidin.
➢ Isoflavone derivatives have a distinct estrogenic effect
➢ Hepatoprotective
➢ Anti-oxidant
1. Flavone Glycosides Ex.: Diosmin
Occurs in buchu leaves
The diuretic and diaphoretic action of the leaves is owed to diosmin, and diosphenol, the
main constituent of the volatile oil of the leaf.
Uses:
• Treating various disorders of blood vessels including hemorrhoids, varicose
veins, poor circulation in the legs (venous stasis), and bleeding (hemorrhage)
in the eye or gums.
• For swelling arms (lymphedema) following breast cancer surgery.
• Protect against liver toxicity.
• It is often taken in combination with hesperidin, another plant chemical.
