1) Sucralfate
• Chemically, it is a complex of the disaccharide sugar, sucrose, combined with
sulfate and aluminum.
• Sucralfate is the aluminum hydroxide complex of sucrose sulfate.
• Chemical name of sucralfate is: α-D-Glucopyranoside-β-D-fructofuranosyl-
octakis-(hydrogen sulfate) aluminum complex. Its structural formula is:
• In acidic solutions (e.g., gastric acid) it forms a thick paste with a strong
negative charge.
• Properties:
• It is white powder, insoluble in water and most organic solvents, soluble in
acids and alkalies
Pharmacolgical effects:
• It is minimally absorbed into the body, and its actions are entirely on the lining
of the stomach and duodenum as it can form gel-like webbing over ulcerated or
eroded tissues serving as a sort of a bandage. It is effective in the upper GI tract:
stomach, duodenum, and possible esophagus.
