Cartagena lpecacuanha resembles the Rio one in structure and characters
of elements but many of starch granules are larger and measure up to 22 µ in
diameter.
Rio ipecacuanha root: A, transverse section; B, transverse
section of outer part of the root (starch is omitted); C, group
of phloem; D, starch granules; E, sclereids from the perieycle of
the stem; c, cambium; ck, cork; cr, acicular crystals of calcium
oxalate; mr, medullary ray; pd, phelloderm; pg, phellogen; ph,
phloem; xy, xylem.
Powder
Powdered Ipeca is grayish brown to light brown; characterized by:
1- Numerous fragments of thin-walled parenchymatous cells filled with
starch granules.
2- Scattered cells with bundles of raphides of calcium oxalate.
3- Few brown fragments of cork cells.
4- Few fragments of wood showing tracheids, tracheidal vessels, 10-20 u
wide and fibrous cells with starch granules; raphides of calcium
oxalate, 20-80 µ long scattered throughout the powder.
5- Sometimes in fragments; numerous starch granule, simple or mostly
comport: of 2-8 components. Individual granules are oval, rounded muller-
shaped, up to 15 µ in diameter in Rio and up to 22 µ in Cartagena variety.
6- Few sclereids and occasional phloem fibers from rhizome are observed.
