                                            RHIZOMA VALERIANAE


              Valeriana,  Common  Valerian,  Valerian,  Valerian  Rhizome,  Valerian  Root,
              Hasheishatul Herr.

                     It is the carefully dried rhizome, stolon and roots of Valeriana officinalis L.,
              known as European Valerian or of V. wulchii Dc. known as Indian Valerian, Fam.
              Valerianaceae. Valerian contains not more than 5% of stem bases and not more than
              5% of foreign organic matter and yields not less than 3% v/w essential oil.

                     It is native to Europe and northern Asia, naturalized in north-eastern America.
              The drug is obtained from wild and cultivated plants in Holland, Belgium, France,
              Germany (to a small extent), eastern Europe, and in Japan and the USA.
