Pharmacognosy-2 (PG303) Level 2 Clinical Pharmacy-Pharm D

1- Determination of ether extractive: Shake, frequently, 1 g of finely
powdered Jalap resin for 1 h. in a dry flask with 20 ml of ether, filter, and
wash the residue and flask with successive portions each of 5 ml of ether.
Evaporate the ethereal extracts and washings in a tared dish; dry at 100 ºC
and weigh; not more than 0.15 g of residue is left (not more than 15 % is
soluble in ether; c.f. Scammory and Colophony resins).
2- Reaction with oxidising agents: Dissolve the ethereal residue of the above
test in a few ml of alcohol, dip in the solution a piece of filter paper, remove
and dry. Add to the dry paper a drop of ferric chloride T.S.; no blue color
                     is produced (c.f. Guaiacum resin).
3- Reaction with copper acetate T.S.: Triturate 1 g of powdered Jalap resin
with 10 ml of petroleum ether, and filter. Shake the filtrate with 3 ml of
dilute copper acetate T.S.; the petroleum ether layer is not colored green
                     (c.f. Colophony).
              Constituents
Jalap resin is glycosidal and yields on hydrolysis glucose and rhamnose
together with convolvulinolic acid and ipuranol which are crystalline substances as
well as butyric, isovaleric, tiglic and exogonic acids.

              Uses
Jalap resin is a cathartic possessing hydragogue activity.

                                                 Podophyllum Resin

              Syn.: Resina Podophylli; Podophyllin

Podophyllum. resin is a mixture of resins prepared from the dried rhizomes
and roots of Podophyllum peltatum L., known as American Podophyllum resin,
and of Podophyllum hexandrum Royle, known as Indian Podophyllum resin (Fam.
              Berberidaceae).

              Preparation
Podophyllum resin is prepared by percolating powdered podophyllum with
alcohol, concentrate the percolate and pour into acidulated water when the resin
precipitates. The precipitated resin is filtered, washed twice with water, dried and
              powdered.

              Description
Podophyllum Resin occurs in brownish-grey masses, or frequently in light
              brown  to  greenish-yellow  amorphous  powder;  odor, characteristic  liquorice-like;
taste, bitter and acrid. Podophyllum resin darkens in color on exposure to light or to
