Arrival in YorkYour holiday starts in York where you meet the Tour Manager at our hotel, minutes from the city%u2019s Roman walls. York%u2019s highlights include York Minster and the Shambles, a narrow medieval street with timber-framed buildings. The city also has many museums, including the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. There is time to explore before dinner at the hotel. Day 2. RHS Harlow Carr and the spa town of HarrogateToday begins with a visit to Harrogate%u2019s RHS Harlow Carr Gardens where you are free to wander through the inspiring displays, before an afternoon at leisure in the Victorian spa town of Harrogate. Here, you could visit one of the town%u2019s museums and galleries, or head to Betty%u2019s Tea Rooms, the first site of this famous tea shop, for a Yorkshire afternoon tea. Day 3. Whitby and the North Yorkshire Moors RailwayWhitby is a popular seaside resort and you can discover it at leisure this morning. After breakfast and a coach journey to this coastal gem, visit the historic Benedictine abbey that inspired Bram Stoker%u2019s Dracula. For panoramic views, wander to St Mary%u2019s Church or stroll along the wide sandy beach or wooden pier. Whitby is renowned for its excellent fish and chip restaurants, and you could try some for lunch. This afternoon we join the nostalgic North Yorkshire Moors Railway*. Looking out from restored heritage carriages, we pass heather-clad moorland and quaint villages of the North York Moors. Our journey ends at Pickering where our coach takes us back to our hotel. With a free evening, you could dine at one of York%u2019s many restaurants or pubs. *Trains are steam-hauled where possible, however due to timetable changes or weather conditions, heritage diesel locomotives may be running instead.Day 4. Discovering YorkAfter breakfast, we visit York Minster. One of the world%u2019s most magnificent cathedrals, we%u2019re shown this 13th-century masterpiece on a guided tour. You are then free to find some lunch in one of the many eating places in York%u2019s medieval streets, before our next York experience %u2013 a city cruise. As we sail along the River Ouse through the city, we learn more about its history from live, onboard commentary. The rest of the afternoon is a chance to discover more of York and dine independently. You could walk along the medieval city walls, enjoy a peaceful stroll beside the River Ouse or visit the Museum Gardens. After dinner, you might opt to join one of the city%u2019s famous ghost walks and learn why it is known as %u2018the most haunted city in Europe%u2019.Day 5. Excursion to Castle HowardThis morning we drive to the historic Castle Howard. One of England%u2019s most well-known stately homes, it is set in the Howardian Hills. We are given a guided tour of its elegant architecture and ornate interiors, after which you can explore the estate at your own pace. You could visit the Walled Garden, Atlas Fountain and the Temple of the Four Winds %u2013 which has fantastic views across the rolling hills. You could also enjoy lunch or an afternoon tea there, before we return by coach to York. Tonight is our final dinner at the hotel. Day 6. Homeward boundFollowing a leisurely breakfast, it%u2019s time to check out of our hotel. You can make your way home or continue exploring Yorkshire on your own.
