Arrival in HarrogateYour holiday begins in Harrogate, nestled on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, where the Tour Manager waits to greet you at a beautifully restored Georgian hotel. After settling in, there%u2019s time to explore, maybe visit the famous Betty%u2019s Caf%u00e9 Tea Rooms or browse some independent shops before dinner. Day 2. Harlow Carr Gardens and historic YorkWe visit the inspiring gardens of RHS Harlow Carr, with its everchanging landscapes, fragrant wildflower meadows and colourful borders. After free time, we continue to the walled city of York for a guided tour. Walking its cobbled streets we view medieval, Victorian and Georgian architecture, and learn about the city%u2019s Viking and Roman heritage. There%u2019s time to find lunch before visiting the glorious Minster, one of Europe%u2019s largest Gothic cathedrals, with entrance included. Your afternoon is free and you could visit the National Railway Museum, settle down in a caf%u00e9, or enjoy a local pint at one of York%u2019s countless pubs. Returning to Harrogate by rail, we enjoy dinner at our hotel.Day 3. Whitby and the North Yorkshire Moors RailwayA trip by coach to the harbour town of Whitby, where we discover its famous abbey ruins. This clifftop structure was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey, and the inspiration for Bram Stoker%u2019s %u2018Dracula%u2019. With a few hours free, you could stroll along the seafront and lunch on fish and chips. Later, we visit the RNLI Lifeboat Station, one of the oldest in the country. From Whitby, we drive to the village of Grosmont to join the scenic North Yorkshire Moors Railway*, travelling by train through Yorkshire%u2019s best-loved landscapes, ancient woodlands and heather-clad moors. Day 4. Travelling north on the Settle-Carlisle RailwayDriving to Settle, we join the Settle-Carlisle Railway for a scenic trip through the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Regarded as England%u2019s most scenic rail journey, we cross the Ribblehead Viaduct, which cuts through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, and skirt the North Pennines, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In Carlisle, there%u2019s time at leisure over lunch. Continuing by rail to Hexham, we drive to our next hotel in Northumberland. *Trains are steam-hauled where possible, however due to timetable changes or weather conditions, heritage diesel locomotives may be running instead.Day 5. Exploring Alnwick CastleToday sees us visit Alnwick Castle for a guided tour of its staterooms and landscaped gardens. For a thousand years the castle has served as a military stronghold, a royal residence, and recently a popular filming location for movies including Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. Day 6. Bamburgh Castle and LindisfarneOur coach takes us to Bamburgh, a coastal town with a striking castle, for a private %u2018behind the scenes%u2019 tour before it opens to the public. From here, we make our way to the 6th-century Holy Island of Lindisfarne, home to a community of monks. We are invited to a tasting of the island%u2019s mead, which blends grapes, honey, and a mixture of herbs, before a visit to the priory. Day 7.
