The following is a list of different aspects of a Total Communication Approach:%u2022 Speech and vocalisations%u2022 Facial expression and body language%u2022 Actions or behaviours%u2022 Signing %u2022 Picture or object communication%u2022 Written language and drawing%u2022 Assistive technology and voice output communication devicesThe Total Communication Approach is a two directional method that is, both communicating partners have access to a variety of communication methods. Whichever sort of communication is used, their communication will be received, acknowledged, and responded to. This allows for individualised combinations of communication methods. All individuals, particularly with speech, language and communication needs, may benefit from a Total Communication Approach. Support strategies for the Gestalt Language Processor should be considered as part of a Total Communication Approach.What is AAC?Augmentative and Alternative communication (AAC) refers to the different range of communication systems and strategies which can be implemented to support speech, language and communication. No-tech, or person-based AAC, includes the use of non-verbal communication such as body language, facial expression, vocalisations and pointing and more formal systems such as signing. AAC can include using objects of reference to support understanding.Low-tech or paper-based AAC are communication aids such as the use of photographs, pictures, symbols, and written labels. These may come in the form of communication books, visual schedules, or choice boards.
