These devices usually have voice output. Sophisticated computer technology is used to devise specific communication systems for people with complex health, sensory, physical and communication needs.Using a variety of AAC is therefore using a Total Communication Approach.Syiopouo-Deli (2021) reviewed the research published on the effectiveness of different types of AAC in improving communication skills and in enhancing the vocabulary of autistic children. The review found that overall most studies demonstrated positive outcomes from the use of AAC.A person following a different developmental pathway may have different AAC needs . Referral to an AAC specialist speech and language therapist is recommended to assess how and when to use a communication aid. Best practice to meet individual needs is where there is collaboration with the child or young person, family members, and other professionals in determining the best AAC support plan.
