58 %u00a9 Elklan Training Limited 2025Elklan Supporting Gestalt Language Processing %u2013 a Total Communication Approach7.0 BEHAVIOUR SUPPORTIf a child or young person has differences in their behaviour and is identified as needing additional support, they are likely to benefit from observation using the ABC chart method. The behaviour can be observed and monitored by recording:A = The Antecedent %u2013 what has happened prior to a behaviour of concern or what may have triggered the behaviourB = The Behaviour %u2013 a direct description of the behaviour without any interpretationC = The Consequence %u2013 what was the result or outcome of the behaviour?7.1 BEHAVIOUR IS COMMUNICATIONIt is important to recognise that every behaviour is communicating something. A child or young person with communication needs, a Gestalt Language Processor or a non-speaker can benefit from others understanding how their communication needs and differences are linked to their behaviour. If a setting explores why a child or young person needs behaviour support and puts strategies in place they are adopting and using an individual and proactive approach to support behaviour.Therefore, exploring the antecedent is proactive. First, it is good practice to check the environment.7.2 CHECK ENVIRONMENT AND SENSORY NEEDSIf the child or young person needs support with their sensory regulation, they may show sensory avoidant or sensory seeking behaviour. It is important to make sure that sensory needs are accommodated.It may be helpful to have a sensory profile of the Gestalt Language Processing child or young person and any sensory support in place. The environment needs to be checked. For example, is the background noise OK or not OK? Are there too many visual distractions or strong smells? Is it too bright, too hot or cold? A low-arousal environment may be suitable for learning tasks.If the child or young person has too high a demand imposed on them, or if they are under motivated, they may show a behaviour of concern. Therefore, the level of demand for learning and functional tasks should be at the %u2018just right%u2019 level.
