At this stage they are using short phrases and sentences including verbs. An indication of self-generation at Stage 4 may be the presence of grammatical errors because these do not occur at the earlier GLP stages where a child or young person is repeating words, strings of words and/or sentences as they are heard %u2013 Gestalts. At Stages 5 and 6 the child or young person may be regarded as having developed sentence building skills and further developed their vocabulary. They may be understanding more and generating novel, complex sentences. They may be asking and answering questions and have increased their functional use of language beyond using gestalts. However, they may have specific areas of language, social and mental health needs and usually benefit from continued, individualised and embedded learning support strategies. It is important to be aware of the large range of language support strategies and approaches, some of which are outlined below. Many will be recognisable from other publications and have been used to support children and young people who have speech, language and communication needs but who appear to be following an analytical developmental pathway. There is evidence, from clinical experience, that these approaches can be effective for children and young people who follow the GLP pathway. Until such time that there is evidence that these strategies are not effective, careful implementation and evaluation of such strategies will help to build a picture of what is and what is not effective.
