Lintels
Up to around 1930 most Victorian buildings and older were designed and built with archway type lintels in order to distribute the load of brickwork evenly over doorways and window openings.
After 1945, most residential homes were constructed with or without straight lintels. More commonly, however, lintels were not used, instead they relied on a strong timber frame, window or door, to carry out this function.
For the past 20 years Findley’s have been replacing loose, damaged and dropped brickwork on residential properties due to the omission of such lintels. This can often be seen on homes with diagonal cracks and dropped brickwork above window jams and doorways.
The solution is to have all the loose brickwork removed, the existing panel of brickwork supported by Acro posts and then the full installation of either solid, concrete, steel or Catnic insulated lintels. This should be carried out by a building professional of which Findley's employee three senior technicians in this field.
