MOUSETIVAL
AT THE GEORGIAN THEATRE, STOCKTON
After unfortunately skipping two years because of covid, Mousetival is back this month for its 4th year at The Georgian Theatre, featuring a line-up curated by hosts, the enigmatic Mouses – not forgetting the fantastic poster by Tommings, of course. The festival's return has been highly anticipated, with 2019’s line-up featuring high-profile bands such as Dead Naked Hippies and Crumbs. And this year’s line-up also looks fab. The DIY safe-space festival is put on by Mouses, who will also be headlining. The event aims to be as inclusive as possible, being family-friendly and an all-ages event, but also sporting a line-up full of queer and outspoken creators. No matter who you are, you won’t be out of place here. Mouses themselves have been called “both exhausting and thrilling to watch in equal measure” and have shared stages with bands such as IDLES, Wolf Alice and The Lovely Eggs. They make messy, grungy Lo-Fi punk music, with almost every aspect being full of energy and abrasive noise - and their lyrics are just as chaotic.Joining them are Squiggles, the latest project from The Spook Schools Niall McCamley who has previously talked about gender nonconformity, sexuality and queer issues in his music. His music is silly, upbeat and heartwarming and it's meant to make you smile and feel less alone. Expect an indie/alternative sound with an abundance of sickly sweet guitars and simple but effective drum beats. BigFatBig will also be joining in on the festivities. They’ve recently erupted onto the North East music scene, playing sets for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend and landing national-level festival slots, such as Lamplight Festival, with their punk attitude screaming out: “I don’t wanna be sad anymore” as they go. The doors open at 1pm so to fill out the day, there’ll also be a host of up-and-coming bands to warm you up including stylish fuzz rockers Scruffy Bear, Kkett, who make ‘joycore’ and can be seen wearing masquerade masks and makeup, and Faithful Johannes, ready to speak spoken word to you with electronic accompaniment and an ironing board. Animal Byproducts will also poke at the patriarchy with punk fit with trumpets, Mage Tears will add some melancholy guitar to the night, Salsola will bring out their fun-yet-soulful side, and expect a very special start to the night with the debut performance from riot-grrrl band, Sorority Grrrls.
