EFTERKLANG
AT GOSFORTH CIVIC THEATRE, NEWCASTLE
Efterklang, a Danish band just about old enough to drink in America, head to Gosforth Civic Theatre in Newcastle on Wednesday 24th August. Sound-wise, expect highly experimental post-rock with an emphasis on vibrant orchestral sections with catchy, melodic pop vocals and synths. String sections often cut through their soft vocal performances and are accompanied by rhythmic arpeggios and complex drum beats. One thing’s for sure - their music is thoroughly interesting to listen to, while still being easy listening and lacking overbearing pretension or sounding too overly technical. In the studio, they’re a three-piece; however, live, they are joined by a host of other talented musicians including pianists, saxophonists, violinists and many other orchestral musicians. Over the years, they’ve released seven LPs, a collection of EPs and live albums, as well as a side project under the name of Liima, working with a range of different labels including Yorkshire’s The Leaf Label. To support other bands, they also formed their own record label, Rumraket, which has released music from a number of Danish bands. Their second album, ‘Parades’, was critically acclaimed. For the release, they brought in producer Darren Allison (best known for his work with Spiritualised) and managed to make it into the Danish charts, peaking at #10, as well as being named the 38th greatest, most essential album by Clash magazine in 2009. For as many years as they’ve been together, they’ve been experimenting and transporting their listeners to expansive, ethereal landscapes. This became all too literal with their fourth release, ‘Piramida’, recorded on the arctic island of Spitsbergen, an abandoned Russian coal mining settlement with a backdrop of huge industrial complexes and silos that acted as reverb tanks - appropriate for a band whose name means ‘reverberation’ in Danish - featuring the world's northernmost piano as well as presumably a host of other instruments that feature on it. Out of that expedition came ten tracks that were released to acclaim, peaking at #8 on Danish album charts. To help with that arctic weather - or perhaps just for a unique merch idea - Efterklang unveiled their own ‘Sock Society’ in 2021 for enthusiasts of their music or just funky socks. They aim to make four pairs of socks a year, with five released overall so far, made from all organic material in Malmö, Sweden. ADAM BRACCHI
