CONFLAGRATION
AT BALTIC, GATESHEAD
Bringing together sculpture, video, sound and text, Jala Wahid’s work highlights how global and interregional politics have shaped Kurdish identity. Her innovative practice explores this at the intersection of fiction and reality and touches on urgent issues in relation to nationhood, diasporic living and migration, intergenerational connections and cultural manifestations. Born in 1988, Wahid lives and works in London and studied at Goldsmiths College, University of London and The Royal Academy of Arts. She is also co-founder of the feminist and contemporary art journal, SALT. magazine. Her recent exhibitions have included 'Rock Fortress' in Georgia, 'Cry Me A Waterfall' in Leicester and 'Reconfigured' in New York. This multi-media exhibition is Wahid’s first major institutional solo display and has received support from The Foundation Foundation. This year, BALTIC celebrates 20 years since it opened its doors to the public, and this stunning exhibition forms parts of those celebrations. You can see Conflagration from the 22nd October 2022 to the 30th April 2023. EMMA CHESWORTH

KATHERINE RYAN
AT STOCKTON GLOBE
If you don’t know who Katherine Ryan is then the rock you have been living under must be huge. As a Comedian, TV Personality, Creator and Star of the Netflix show The Duchess, it’s fair to say that Katherine’s talent appears to be endless, quickly making her one of the most well-known faces on the British comedy scene (despite being Canadian). With two previous Netflix comedy specials including In Trouble (2017) and Glitter Room (2019), and with various appearances on BBC’s Live at the Apollo, it is no wonder the Canadian is as widely-loved as she is. Winning the Funny Woman Award in 2008 - where the runner-up to Katherine was Sara Pascoe - set a solid foundation to propel her into the comedy world. Appearances on Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats in 2012 upon her relocation to the United Kingdom furthered her popularity, putting her on course to be a comedian on the circuit of great British comedy television. Linking up with Jimmy Carr again, Katherine also hosted a reboot of the series Your Face or Mine? which saw 6 Seasons on Comedy Central. Her Netflix show, The Duchess, which first aired in 2020, see’s Katherine credited as the show’s Writer, Executive Producer and Creator. Based on a single mother’s life in London, there is no doubt that Katherine has drawn on her own experiences of motherhood in the modern world to create this comedic gem. During her stand-up performance, Katherine brings an interesting brand of comedy to the table. Not only are her fingers seemingly always on the pulse of current affairs, but she presents it in a way that is relatable to her fans in their day-to-day lives. Her new show, Missus, has been described as Katherine’s new perspective on life, having married her first love, which is uncharted territory for the comedian. This show is her chance to share the unexpected journey she is on with her fans. Life has a funny way of throwing
