The children do not want to engage with their peers and may push them away. They are happy to be on their own, directing their own play without needing to be concerned about others. They are exploring and learning about the materials they are playing with. Georgia plays on her own. She tends to hold the toys close to herself and ignores what everyone else is doing. If other children start talking to the adult, Georgia tends to stop engaging with the adult too, puts her head down and just plays by her self.(8-20 mths) (16-26 mths)Parallel play Around 2 years old children start to play alongside each other without interaction. They may watch other children but only make fleeting attempts to make meaningful contact. Typically 2 year olds will stand around a water tray alongside each other playing quite happily on their own but not engaging with the group.(22-36 mths) (30-50 mths)Cooperative play This is the stage where children are beginning to be able to interact with each other more often than with adults. This develops around 4-5 years. They want to play together and share toys and take turns in games. Arguments can occur but they are able use their language to describe, negotiate, reflect, plan and hypothesise, enabling more cooperation with each other. By the time they start school most children are able to play cooperatively with others, some still may find this difficult.(40-60 mths)
