If possible, share these observations with colleagues and work together.Use the checklist in a variety of situations with different children to identify your style of interaction and your strengths and weaknesses.Look at aspects which are rated %u2018sometimes%u2019. Choose one of these and try and modify your interaction with the children. Note the changes in the way the children behave and/or communicate. Practise these changes for 10 minutes every day until it feels more natural and you are confident about applying the new pattern of interaction with different children in different situations.Next, try and change other aspects rated %u2018sometimes%u2019 one at a time. After this move onto those rated %u2018never%u2019! If you change those rated %u2018sometimes%u2019 you will have more confidence in modifying those aspects which you will find harder.Did you%u2026%u2026 Never Sometimes Always1. Let the child choose the toy or activity?2. Follow what the child was doing?3. Wait for the child to communicate/talk and provide thinking time?4. Listen to what the child said?5. Talk about what the child was doing?6. Use short, simple sentences?7. Use non-verbal communication to help the child to understand what is said?8. Limit the number of questions asked?9. Repeat what the child says so he hears good examples? (This will develop the structure of his language and words)10. Add a short, simple idea? (This will expand his vocabulary and knowledge)11. Give praise by stating or explaining what the child was doing well.12. Check round the room to make sure each child has had some high quality adult interaction.
