(say the word quickly and not over precisely - as if being used in an everyday sentence).%u2022 Don%u2019t repeat the word. Explain not to worry - it is only an exercise and this reflects real life, children hear new words being spoken quickly and usually within a whole sentence! %u2022 Ask do we know what sort of a word it is?%u2026.could it be an object?%u2026%u2026could it be an action?%u2026%u2026%u2026..could it be a sport or form of recreation?%u2022 Hopefully, no-one will know and if these questions have been asked slowly enough 20 seconds will have elapsed so that when%u2026.%u2022 You ask %u2018Can you say the word?%u2019 most will not be able to.Experience the word%u2022 Next hand round some polyfit couplets! %u2022 Let learners explore them.%u2022 Ask what is it for? Make sure they understand that it is used to hold two pipes together. You insert the pipe and then pull the ring so that the tongues inside the couplet grip the pipe.%u2022 Now state again that it is called a %u2018polyfit couplet%u2019%u2022 Ask %u2018what is it called?%u2019%u2022 Hopefully learners will now know what the word means and be able to name the object.Relating this to children. You might be able to repeat it immediately but you are unlikely to remember it because it has no meaning.%u2022 You could remember the word once you had explored the object.
