Elklan. Speech and Language Support for 3-5s%u00a9 Elklan Training Limited 2023 64S4(Slide 79)%u2022 What you can%u2019t do with it (Mouth the brush)%u2022 The child learns about different objects and by 9 months a child will start to use objects appropriately e.g. if he is given a hairbrush he will brush his hair, a toothbrush - brushes his teeth and a dustpan and brush - would sweep the floor. This is called %u2018defining an object by use%u2019.%u2022 This type of play is very important because it suggests that the child is storing information in his mind and is developing an internal awareness or idea for various objects. Encourage practitioners to look out for this in young children or children with multiple learning difficulties.(Slide 80)%u2022 Over time he will hear the word for the object he is exploring over and over again until eventually he learns that abstract pattern of sounds represents the word, e.g. %u2018brush%u2019 .%u2022 At this early stage the child will recognise only a very few words and he will only understand these words in context, e.g. %u2018bye-bye%u2019 whilst being held in Mum%u2019s arms at the door with someone leaving and Mum waving. Likewise %u2018brush%u2019 but only in the everyday situation in which the child%u2019s hair is brushed.%u2022 So, these early words will only be words for things he has had the opportunity to explore in depth and at the parent or carer name, so that he can link the word to the object.
