This may take another 6 months. %u2022 It is important to emphasise how understanding comes before talking and to expect a lag of time between.%u2022 Without this crucial framework/set of puzzle pieces, for each object/concept/idea there is nothing onto which to hook information about how to understand or say the word for it.%u2022 So a child must explore the world around him starting with the simple objects, actions and situations that he experiences, to develop the puzzle frameworks (concepts) on which to hook the words.%u2022 The above slides and explanation may refer to a baby but we all continue to learn words by developing these frameworks and we add to them as we acquire knowledge. For example, a hairdresser will have more detailed information about different brushes than most of us.(Slide 82)%u2022 Mapping words to objects, actions and situations as a child plays is the most important way an adult can help a child to develop their vocabulary.
