Talk about what the child is doing or looking at%u2022 This will ensure that your language matches his focus of attention. He is more likely to listen and learn if the adult follows his lead.3. Introduce the simple vocabulary first%u2022 Use simple versions of words first e.g. talk about %u2018trousers%u2019 then add %u2018jeans, dungarees, jogging bottoms%u2019 etc. Ensure that all carers are consistent about the vocabulary they use.%u2022 Reinforce the words that would be useful for the child to learn. %u2022 Reinforce the words over and over again. %u2022 AL - Ensure that the range of vocabulary represents the diverse cultural backgrounds of the children in the setting.4. Give the child time to think and respond%u2022 This is particularly important for those who know a word but cannot always find the word quickly enough when it is needed.%u2022 AL - Children with AL also need extra time as they may have difficulty finding the right word in the right language due to limited exposure and/or use of the word.5. Model the words%u2022 Give the child time to think and then, if he still does not respond, say the word so that he hears clear examples. 6. Use a variety of multi-sensory activities7. Encourage topic work and frequent exposure to the same set of words%u2022 Topic based work can provide exciting and different opportunities to explore objects and language that might not necessarily be given the same focus during selfdirected free play. %u2022 Topic based work is valuable for children with delayed language because they can be made aware of how the objects and words are linked. This, in turn, supports the storage, retrieval and use of information.%u2022 AL - For children with AL, adopt a total communication environment (e.g. pictures, gestures, signs).%u2022 Also, make use of the resources available to you at school e.g. bilingual members of staff when introducing new vocabulary.
