Involve parents so that the vocabulary is reinforced at home too%u2022 It is important to focus on vocabulary which links with the child%u2019s interests.%u2022 One of the best ways to achieve this is to work with families. Families are likely to know the child%u2019s interests and may have a different view of what would be useful vocabulary - if they help plan, they are more likely to use and reinforce it at home.%u2022 Share ideas of best practice e.g. the children are more likely to listen to the new word if it is linked to what they are playing with or looking at. %u2022 Where possible, encourage parents to join in with sessions in the setting to increase parents%u2019 awareness of the vocabulary used in the setting.10. Sort and classify objects%u2022 This strengthens the links between words. %u2022 Provides an opportunity to learn category names e.g. %u2018fruit%u2019, %u2018clothes%u2019. Name every item as it is sorted. Initially sort categories that are very different e.g. clothes and vehicles. Later sort more similar groups such as farm and zoo animals.%u2022 If a child finds sorting difficult, use real situations e.g. put cutlery in the drawer and cups in the cupboard. Tidying up time can be very useful!11. Aim to improve the child%u2019s understanding of the word and other words associated with it.%u2022 Whilst talking and playing include the following:o Describe objectso Discuss where an object might be usedo Talk about how it might be usedo Think of other items associated with it.If the child can%u2019t think of the word:%u2022 Give the initial sound as a prompt e.g. %u2018It%u2019s a h.........%u2019%u2022 Give the child a sentence to complete e.g. %u2018Bob the Builder bangs with a ........%u2019%u2022 Give a forced alternative. %u2018Does he bang with a saw or a hammer?%u2019%u2022 Refer to ELB. page 39.
