Speech and Language Support for 3-5sS4%u2022 It is important to monitor vocabulary learning but also to evaluate the impact of the vocabulary planner and change it if it is not effective.%u2022 A simple approach is to use Vocabulary Flowers. %u2022 A Vocabulary Flower (or Vocab Flower for short) has 5 petals to prompt the inclusion of 2 x noun/object words, 2 x describing words and 1 x verb/action word.%u2022 It is a consistent visual reminder so supports vocabulary development as the children play in everyday situations.(Slide 112)%u2022 Display the Vocabulary Flowers by the activity. %u2022 For children where increasing vocabulary is a specific target, use a different colour, different sticker or a stamp for each child.%u2022 When a child is heard to use a word, either the supporting adult can add a colour dot that represents the child or the child can stick on a coloured dot or small sticker or use a stamp. A judgement has to be made whether a child adding a stamp on the Vocab Flower is meaningful and motivating or might this add unnecessary pressure or unwanted attention? Different children may need different approaches.%u2022 (Initials of the children could be used but not if the Vocab Flowers are in general view of everyone in the setting. This would be OK if the records were being kept in a child%u2019s personal progress file).%u2022 The Vocab Flowers should be changed weekly and certainly fortnightly. Templates can be kept so there may be 5 or 6 different Vocab Flowers for the water tray but these would fit with different resources and opportunities laid out in the water tray across different weeks. This vocab planning and the Vocab Flowers can be repeated in rotation.%u2022 An A4 sized template of the Vocab Flower can be found in the Learner Area of the website.
