The children most likely to find emotional vocabulary difficult are children on the autistic spectrum.4.8.1 Why is emotional vocabulary particularly important? %u2022 The concepts of emotion are highly abstract.%u2022 We learn the vocabulary by mapping the words onto the physical feelings experienced in real situations.%u2022 By the age of 3 years, children can talk about their feelings and desires but if a child has delayed language and doesn%u2019t have the vocabulary he will not be able to do this.%u2022 Children with ASD experience the same range of emotions as other children but find learning the vocabulary of emotion difficult. %u2022 Not being able to express feelings and emotions verbally can contribute to behaviour difficulties because the child can only show their feelings through their behaviour.
