                  The eye of the splice is served before splicing. The finished   Holding tension with one hand, use pliers to pull slack out.
                  splice is tarred, then wormed and parceled. Worming mate-
                  rial should be just large enough to provide a smooth sur-
                  face over which to parcel. Carefully seal the join between
                  eye and splice with parceling.

















                  Marline service being applied with another type of serving
                  board—one with a very wide groove suited to splices. Note
                  that marline is threaded through the hole in the handle to gain
                  tension and to prevent accidentally dropping the board over-
                  board.





                                                               To finish the seizing, use a heaving mallet or spike to pull first
                                                               left (facing vise), then right. The wire should snap at the exit
                                                               point during the pull to the right.












                   Serve until you have five turns of twine from the thimble, then
                   stop and pass five turns around the standing part of the wire
                   rope. Slip the twine end under its most recent turn of service.   A finished oversized eye. Note that the seizing-wire diameter

                   Continue serving until all five turns are undone.  matches the marline. Most often,  ⁄32-inch wire will suit.
