Chinese lady with physical features more on the side of British people,
Ms. Gracy (Sundries Department), a girl in search of a boy who must own
a flat, Mr Simon (Imports Trade Finance)- a quiet but efficient officer and
Mr. Sunny Singh( Negotiation of Letter of Credit ) who looked very serious
and busy all the time but was quite sharp at detecting discrepancies in
documents under Letter of Credit due to his long experience in this
department. They all were very respectful, hardworking, and full of
empathy and other values.
We came to know from the departing Expatriate Managers that the main
decision making authority was vested with Expatriate Managers, Chief
Managers and the Country Head. Hence, in case of any lapse happening
in any transaction or process and if thereby, the bank was exposed to
risk or loss, the sword would fall on Expatriate Managers responsible for
the particular transaction, as they would be available even back in India
after their overseas tenure.
The Junior Managers, if charged for negligence in duty, they used to leave
the bank immediately and practically nothing could be done against them
except in case they committed a fraud intentionally. In that case, the bank
could hand over the matter to the police for investigation. Once we
understood this hard fact, we decided to be extra careful in handling the
banking transactions at this center.
Insights from the episode
1. Faster we understand the systems at a new place, better to reduce
fast, the stress of settlement at a new place.
2. Adaptation is a way to stress free settlement
3. For the first time I perceived that qualities like empathy and respect
will enable one to adapt to a new city, a new culture effectively..
