68. Conspiracy against a righteous
boss
T his is about one of my bosses at this branch. Before he joined,
I heard that he was a strict disciplinarian and righteous man. I
was happy that at last someone who could bring back
normalcy at this branch had been identified. The next day of
his joining, he started checking attendance time of entire staff and issued
a stern warning to all employees and officers to attend and leave office
on time, be productive and efficient and cooperate in improving the
performance of the branch that had been under strain for some years.
Anyone coming late for 10 minutes on more than one occasion was
marked on leave for the day. Anyone found leaving early would get salary
for full day deducted on the ground that employee had to work full day
and could not leave early without authorization. The self-determined
norms of productivity by the staff got questioned. Any error was made
accountable.
The sincere ones were happy with the change. The Managers and HODs
were recharged with high morale and confidence and started making the
processes productive and more efficient. Within a period of 2 months,
all employees had fallen in line for punctuality and discipline at the
branch. There were some personalities who were not used to such an
environment of punctuality and attendance and also the curtailment of
unapproved facilities at the cost of the bank. They were least bothered
about the diminishing image and eroding customer base of the bank.
They were just bothered about their personal narrow interests instead
of larger interest of the organization which was the mainstay of their
