                                  history through the history of Matthew
                                  Flinders’ landing and exploration of the
                                  Island on his trip of mapping the coast of
                                  Australia. The Coochiemudlo community
                                  has a strong association for cultural
                                  reasons with this history as it forms part
                                  of the island identity which is reinforced

                                  annually with the Flinders’ Day
                                  celebration and the re-enactment of his
                                  landing on Norfolk Beach.

                                 The community has a special cultural
                                  association with the place through the
                                  tangible and intangible evidence of the
                                  early settlers and tourism pioneers Doug
                                  and Mary Morton. This is acknowledged
                                  through protection and interpretation of
                                  places they built including Morton’s jetty,

                                  lookout steps, and the ‘Khyber Pass’;
                                  Morton’s steps, stone jetty and the
                                  remnants of a further set of stairs and

                                  jetty.
                                 The community has a special cultural
                                  and spiritual association with the role of
