EYESA SHOOFLY DANDY
By Tracy Gantz
The turn can be treacherous, even for those used
to racing around the hook. Painted Josy, the 1-2 favorite in the July 24 Walter Merrick Memorial Stakes at Fair Meadows, had to steady sharply in the turn, and Eyesa Shoofly Dandy came home on top to win his first stakes.
Eyesa Shoofly Dandy broke third, vying with Arbeka Raincloud and TJ Blue Bank. Painted Josy quickly joined them. Going into the turn, Eyesa Shoofly Dandy and Painted Josy were battling when Painted Josy suddenly backed out of the race.
Into the stretch, Eyesa Shoofly Dandy took the lead, but Painted Josy came on again along the rail. Eyesa Shoofly Dandy held off the favorite to win by a head in :46.232. Ty Blackwell, trainer of Painted Josy, lodged an objection against the winner, alleging interference in the turn, but the stewards allowed the result to stand.
Brandon Reed trains Eyesa Shoofly Dandy for owners Curtis Smith & Steve Holt. The gelding initially competed for Smith & breeder Wesley Ann Anglin, who bred Eyesa Shoofly Dandy in Oklahoma from Miss Sound Viking. The mare has 2 winners in 4 starters, including stakes placed CBS Chocoletgold.
G.R. Carter Jr. rode Painted Josy (PYC Paint Your Wagon-She’s Josy TB), winner of this year’s Zoetis Remington Distance Challenge-G3, for
his father, George. Beat This Eye Opener (Beat
The Feet-TB-Arbeka Gray Lady) was for third
under Yordanis Amaro for Gavin McLane Billins and trainer Michelle Hurdle. Followed by Arbeka Raincloud (Voghts Gold-Arbeka Bee Quick), TJ Blue Bank (Royal Blue Chew Chew-Shari Bank TB), Pepperchew (Royal Blue Chew Chew-Cayenne Pepper TB), Furyinmypants (Furyofthewind- Princess Phoebe), Chase This Chic (Country Chicks Man-Boppem Easy) and SRD Bobwirebob (Coronas Prospect-Shouldabeenjoebob-TB). Saritas Blueboy was scratched.
Fair Meadows Maturity
FEATURING MAGIC MAN
by Michael Compton
Featuring Magic Man is getting better with age. The eight-year-old sorrel gelding’s sharp form this season carried over into the $16,000 Fair Meadows
Maturity on July 4 for owner Hector Estrada and trainer Manuel Mata.
Ridden by Paul Nieto, Featuring Magic Man broke well from the three-hole and raced in third position early in the 350-yard dash. He asserted his superiority in the late stages, winning by a neck in a driving finish. He stopped the timer in a lively :17.352, earning a speed index of 97 as well as the $8,730 winner’s share.
It was the initial stakes win of Featuring Magic Man’s 29-start career. The veteran campaigner now has five wins and has placed in 12 others en route to total earnings of $85,602.
Mark Langford bred the gelding in Texas out of winless Featuring Beduino. The mare is more than making up for a lack of productivity on the racetrack in the breeding shed. In addition to Featuring Magic Man, she has also produced Grade 1 stakes winner Jess A Feature with $373,382 banked.
Wagon of Roses LVC (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Precocious Rosie) just missed, finishing 2nd for owner and trainer Rodrigo Covarrubias. Jesus Salazar piloted the four-year-old gelding.
Race favorite Sudden Separation (Inseperable- Okie Dokey Annie) was in contention throughout and checked in third with Alex Baldillez in the irons for owner Duane Murphy and trainer Larry Sharp.
Daltsguninforsuccess (Cartel Success-Dalts Pistol), Carpe Diem Drew (Valiant Hero-Megas Way), I V Gone (Ivory James-Bye Bye Bygones), Naked Spur (Ivory James-Scariest), Flys No Mystery (Fly Jess Fly-Mystery Stride), Cartels Hercules (Cartel Success-Split Can Do It) and Jess Check Me (Feature Mr Jess-Gray Lady Gray) reported home behind the top three finishers.
Rocky Heinzig Stakes
SUDDEN SEPARATION
by Tracy Gantz
Sudden Separation may have found her favorite track. In 3 starts at Fair Meadows in Tulsa already this year, the 4-year-old filly has won 2 stakes and finished 3rd in another. Most recently she triumphed over 8 rivals in the July 24 Rocky Heinzig Stakes. Favored at even money, Sudden Separation broke well in third for jockey James Flores and battled early in the 350 yards with Sweet N Salty to her inside. She got the better of Sweet N Salty and drew off to win by 1 1/2 lengths in :17.419.
Larry Sharp trains Sudden Separation for owner- breeder Duane Murphy. The filly broke her maiden last fall at Will Rogers Downs. In June of this year, she captured the Golden Driller Stakes at Fair Meadows, followed by a third in the Fair Meadows Maturity prior to the Heinzig.
Murphy bred Sudden Separation in Oklahoma from Okey Dokey Annie. Murphy also raced the mare, who won the 2006 Kansas Futurity-G2 and 2 other stakes. She has produced 3 starters, all of them winners. Sharp trained Okie Dokey Annie, and he bred, owned, and trained the 2nd dam, winner Annie Montana.
Longshot Sweet N Salty (Stoli-Cosmic Corona) finished 2nd for jockey Edgar Martinez. Madilyn Watts trains the 4-year-old filly for owner Wade Helton. At Hialeah earlier this year, Sweet N Salty won the Beautiful Prairie Stakes. Gene Cox’s homebred Novas Gold (Gold Medal Jess-Hot Nova) ran 3rd with Agustin Silva aboard. Donnie Strickland trains the 5-year-old gelding, who most recently finished 3rd in the Boyd Morris Memorial Handicap at Remington Park and was 3rd in the 2013 Heinzig. Followed by I
V Gone (Ivory James-Bye Bye Bygones), Redneck Sis (SC Chiseled In Stone-Dads Sassy Sissy), Shelby C (Volcom-Makin Me Money), VW Lucky Advice (Best Advice-Oh Just Lucky), Dominique (Ivory James-Blaze The Mall) & Tomi Girl (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Oh Shutup N Kiss Me). Kateillac scratched.
