AQHA Mexico Derby Challenge
SOUND OF CANDY

The two qualifying races for this classic set the tone for the finals on June 28, as the
10 individuals vied for the prize of 416,300 pesos ($27,753 US approximately) without any past notable records. Sound Of Candy and Apollitical Knockout, who made the best times in the first stage, repeated their arrival positions two weeks later, posting very similar times to their previous performance over 400 yards.
The race developed cleanly for all. From gate 1 the red bay of Haras Ixbiapan with Eddi Cuellar in charge established their dominance, while Apollitical Knockout went after her from the opposite end of the starting gate led by Jose Angel Ambrosio Medina, but the effort was unsuccessful as he finished a length behind Sound Of Candy, who recorded a time of :19.34 for a 102 speed index.
Sound Of Candy, a daughter of Red Storm Cat out of Connemara Girl (by Corona Cartel), took her third win in 8 starts; the first was in 2014 for the trials of the Juvenile Championship and the second one gave her
a spot in this classic of international scope. She was bred in the United States by Carl C. Pevehouse and was saddled by Ismael Ayala.
In the winner’s circle were gathered key members of Haras Ixbiapan, headed by Attorney Enrique Carrion, who in the current season took the AQHA Maiden Challenge of Mexico with Flamazoom (Azoom - Behold Corona, by Corona Cartel). He is also the owner of the two-year-old colt BP Apollitical Policy (Apollitical Jess - CC Policy, by Corona Cartel), who on May 24 set a new record at 300 yards at the Hipodromo de las Americas in :14.95 for a 108 speed index.
The winner’s share was distributed among the 10 participants according to the position they crossed the finish line, with 191,516 pesos (US $12,768 approximately) going to the winner.
Apollitical Knockout (Apollitical Jess
- Adolph Tres Knockout), in his second appearance in Mexico, followed the winner representing the Rancho El Corcel & ridden by Jose Angel Ambrosio Medina. He was saddled by trainer Manuel Celedón Basulto.
Third place went to the filly Keepnit Big Time (Big Time Favorite - Keep The Musicplaying), whose leadership was entrusted to rider Demetrio Gamboa. She runs for Cuadra El Olimpio and was saddled by trainer Everardo Flores.
The rest of the group filled their positions: Pacman (PYC Paint Your Wagon – Lady Knockout), One Cool Eagle (One Famous Eagle – Phat Willie Sister), Perrys Winner
(Mr Jess Perry – Dreamy Winner), Cates Cartel (Ivory James – Cates Cleat), Daring Dynasty (FDD Dynasty – Streakin Love), Coronasboro (Fantastic Corona – Brownsboro) & Look At This Menace (Executive Menace – Go And Look TB).

Las dos carreras de
calificación de este clásico
dieron la pauta hacia el resultado que final- mente se obtuvo el 28 de junio, pues entre
los que se disputaron los 10 pases disponibles hacia el premio de 416,300 pesos ($27,753 US, aproximadamente) no había ninguno con ante- cedentes notables. Sound Of Candy y Apollitical Knockout, que hicieron los mejores tiempos en la primera etapa, repitieron posiciones de llegada dos semanas después, registrando tiempos muy similares a su actuación previa sobre 400 yardas.
La carrera se desarrolló con limpieza para todos. Desde la puerta 1, la colorada de Haras Ixbiapan, con Eddi Cuéllar al mando, estableció su dominio, en tanto que Apollitical Knockout fue por ella desde el extremo opuesto del arrancadero, arren- dado y fustigado por José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, pero el esfuerzo fue infructuoso quedando un largo atrás de Sound Of Candy, quien registró tiempo de 19.34 segundos para un SI de 102.
Sound Of Candy, que es hija de Red Storm Cat en Conne Mara Girl (por Corona Cartel), se acreditó así su tercera victoria en 8 partidas; la primera fue en 2014 durante las eliminatorias del Campeonato Juvenil y la segunda la que
le dio el pase a este clásico de alcance interna- cional. Fue criada en Estados Unidos por Carl Pevehouse C y ensillada por Ismael Ayala.
En el círculo de ganadores
se dieron cita los principales integrantes del Haras Ixbiapan, encabezados por el Abogado Enrique Carrión, que en la actual temporada se acreditó
el AQHA Maiden Challenge
de México, con Flamazoom (Azoom - Behold Corona, por Corona Cartel). También es de su propiedad el potro de dos años BP Apollitical Policy (Apollitical Jess- CCPolicy,porCorona
Cartel), que el 24 de mayo de este año estableció un nuevo récord en 300 yardas en el Hipódromo de Las Américas, con 14.95 segundos, SI 108.
El premio se distribuyó entre los 10 partici- pantes de acuerdo a la posición en que cruzaron la meta, correspondiendo a la campeona 191,516 pesos ($12,768 US, aproximadamente).
Apollitical Knockout (Apollitical Jess
– Adolph Tres Knockout), en su segunda participación en México siguió a la ganadora, representando al Rancho El Corcel, guiado por José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. Lo ensilló el entrenador Manuel Celedón Basulto.
Para la tercera plaza finalizó la potranca Keepnit Big Time (Big Time Favorite – Keep The Musicplaying), cuya dirección fue confiada a Demetrio Gamboa. Corre para la Cuadra El Olimpo y la ensilló el entrenador Everardo Flores.
