Adequan Retama Park Derby Chal.
MY MOMENT OF FAME
by Danny Camp
They say the start is everything, but is it? In the case of the $43,200 Adequan Derby Challenge at Retama Park on August 13, it wasn’t how they started, but how they finished. My Moment Of Fame, who ran a good race in the July 29 trials and finished second in his
heat for the sixth fastest time for the 400 yards, broke sharpley from the 10-post in the finals. Then, the sorrel gelding went even further to the outside. Jockey Luis Vivanco had to take a powerful hold on the left rein to straighten his mount. The jockey was able to get My Moment Of Fame to drift back to the center of the track. In last place from the start to the stretch, My Moment Of Fame flew late in the stretch to reach the wire first
by a nose. The duo stopped the clock at :20.043 to earn a speed index of 92. The first place money was worth $19,872, and takes the gelding’s earnings to $80,606.
My Moment Of Fame is owned by Holly Hooper and trained by Angel Sanchez.
The gelding was bred in Texas by Sarah Huskey out of the 4-time winner Moment Of Epiphany. The mare has produced 100% money earners/ROM from three starters. My Moment Of Fame is her top earner and first stakes winner, also winning the Ben E. Keith Stakes earlier this year.
Mazzimo (The Louisiana Cartel-Las Alamitos) finished second for his team that includes owner/ trainer Jorge Haddad. Esgar Ramirez was handling
the reins. Brookside (Brookstone Bay-I Fly American) settled for a third place finish. Her connections include owner Linda Loftis Tobias and trainer Leon Bard. Nestor Duran was in the irons.
Kid Can Dash (Down N Dash-Quickid Perry), Tellereyematthebar (Teller Cartel-Eye Shine Special), Sure Fire Flyer (Mr Piloto-Segura), Mad Max Cartel (Cartel Success-Eye Can Flirt), Lord Of Reason BR (Good Reason SA-Highlander Lass), Go Binskey Bear Go (FDD Dynasty-Love That Six) and Pure D Rocket (First Wrangler-Pure D Annie) completed the field.
TQHA Classic Stakes-RG3
JESS TOAST WINNER
By Michael Cusortelli
Adisqualification helped Jess Toast Winner earn his third stakes victory in the $35,000 TQHA Classic Stakes-RG3 at Retama Park on July 29.
Jess Toast Winner was moved from second to first after TLC Dale was disqualified from the win and placed third for breaking in sharply from the eight-post and impeding the progress of Potus, who broke from the adjacent post seven.
Ridden by Cipriano Vidana for owner Maria Guadalupe Araiza of Houston and trainer Santiago Riojas, Jr., Jess Toast Winner was bumped twice at the start, but over came that to rally in a late rush to the finish line.
Jess Toast Winner was timed in at :20.233, as the homebred four-year-old gelding reached the wire a nose in front of Potus.
Raced in Texas and Louisiana, Jess Toast Winner has now won eight of his 13 outs, and the $21,000 winner’s share of the TQHA Classic Stakes purse pushed his bankroll to $154,075.
Jess Toast Winner’s race record now includes three stakes victories - all at Retama Park. Beside his most recent win in this stakes event, he has also won the 2014 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2 and last year’s TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby, in which he set a New Track Record for 400 yards.
Jess Toast Winner was returning to his native state following a second-place finish, a neck behind winner Exquisite Stride, in the 400-yard $50,000 Miss Polly Classic Stakes-G3 at Delta Downs. Jess Toast Winner also has a third place finish in the 2014 Old South Futurity, a fourth in this year’s Sam Houston Classic-G2, a 5th in the 2014 Dash For Cash Futurity-G1, and was a finalist in last year’s Sam Houston Derby-G3
The gelding is the first winner from four starters foaled by the winning mare Runaway Jessy. The mare, who has produced 100% money earners, was a finalist in the Texas Juvenile Challenge-G3 and Oklahoma Juvenile Challenge-G3.
Potus (Toast To Dash-Toole N Round) placed second for owner Pat Allen. Noe Villatoro rode
for trainer Judd Kearl. TLC Dale (The Louisiana Cartel-Halies Dale) finished third under Manuel Gutierrez. He is trained by Santiago Riojas, Jr. for owner Rogelio Garza. Followed by Jumpn Streak (Jumpn Chic-Juanas Streak), Iknow Heknows Iknow (Tres Seis-Dashing Patriot), Blue Duck La Jolla (Hiclass La Jolla-Sandra Walker), Sol Go Odie Go (Hiclass La Jolla-Zoomintheclouds), and Darians Famous Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Special Wear).
