Namehimastreaker NM Classic QH Champ. (RG1)
Rime Chimes, a 4-year-old son of Sign To Be A Runaway campaigned by Carlos F. Paez, outran his 9-1 odds to win the October 27, 440-yard Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia Park.
Prepped by Jesus Carrete and aided by a reported 10-mph tail wind, Rime Chimes covered his quarter-mile trip in :21.438, and his margin of victory was a clear 1 1/4 lengths from 3-1 second choice Magnifico Dragon. Paul Nieto rode the gray stallion, who earned a 103 speed index and the $105,000 winner’s share of the $175,000 purse.
Rime Chimes was bred by Cynthia H. Dick, and he was making his first official start since January 19, when he ran fourth, 1 1/4 lengths behind winner Marcus Medallion,
in the 440-yard, $85,000 Dona Ana County Handicap (R) for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park. His sire, Sign To Be A Runaway, is a winning 16-year-old son of the Runaway Winner stallion Real Runaway.
Sign To Be A Runaway’s leading progeny include Saul, the winner of last year’s New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park. The stallion is owned by Jose R. Riojas and stands at The Quarter Company at Chamberino, New Mexico.
Rime Chimes is out of Rime Has A Chick, a 14-year-old daughter of the Rime stallion
Major Rime who earned $276,544 from 33 starts and won two graded stakes in New Mexico from 2007-11, including the ’08 Pelican Stakes (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.
Rime Chimes’ second dam, the winning Chicks A Blazin mare Chicks Chamisa, pro- duced two other stakes winners, both of whom are half sisters to Rime Has A Chick -- Sixy Chamisa, a Sixes Royal mare who won the 2009 New Mexico Breeders’ (RG2) and New Mexico Cup (RG2) futurities, and Me Chickie, a daugh- ter of Major Rime who won the ’09 Lineage Championship (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.
Rime Chimes traces back to his third dam, Moolahs Parade, a Sparkling Moolah mare who foaled graded stakes winners Nathans Rocket and Moolahs Crown.
Rime Chimes has won four of 10 starts, and the Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship marked his first victory in four outs at the 440-yard trip. The stallion has banked $172,079 while raced exclusively in New Mexico, and he was a finalist in last year’s New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) at Zia Park.
Jess A Satin Flash ran third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Rime Chimes, and was followed by 2-1 favorite Marcus Medallion, Hollywoodcrown, Siximoons, Major Bites, Big Sierra Cartel, DM Ada Kat, and Jesse Lane.
Runner-up Magnifico Dragon is a 5-year- old son of the First Down Dash stallion Zulu Dragon campaigned by Daniel Balderrama. The sorrel gelding has won nine of 30
races, including the 2016 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park, and the $35,000 runner-up share of the Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship purse pushed his earnings to $468,372.
An $8,000 claimer during the 2018-19 Sunland Park meet, Jess A Satin Flash races
for Bertha S. Irigoyen. The 6-year-old son of champion First Moonflash has won seven of 33 starts, all in New Mexico, and the $17,500 third-place share of the purse increased the sor- rel gelding’s bankroll to $115,614.
