Hustle Up led at every call en route to a three-quarter length victory in the October 27, 1-mile Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Trained by Todd Fincher for owners Dale F. Taylor Racing LLC, Bobby J. McQueen, and Suzanne Kirby, Hustle Up covered 1 mile in 1:41. Roimes Chirinos rode the 3-year-old dark bay or brown Abstraction gelding.
Hustle Up was bred by Brad King and Todd Fincher. The gelding is the first official black- type stakes winner from 41 starters sired by Abstraction, a 9-year-old son of the A.P. Indy stallion Pulpit and Andujar, a Grade 2-winning daughter of Quiet American., .
Racing in three states in 2013, Abstraction earned $86,945 from four starts, and his two wins included the $75,750 Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $1.2 million from two crops, including Evacuee, the winner of the September 22, $196,632 New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity (R).
Abstraction is a half-brother to stakes win- ner Marion Ravenwood. The stallion is owned by a partnership and stands for a $3,500 fee at Doubletree Farm at Hobbs, New Mexico.
A half-brother to two-time futurity win- ner On The Low Down, Hustle Up is one of
three winners from as many starters foaled by Speedin Excess, a winning daughter 13-year- old daughter of In Excess (IRE) who ran second in the ’08 Barretts Debutante Stakes at Fairplex Park in California. The gelding’s third dam, the winning Viceregal mare Stray Flight, produced two stakes winners -- Ever Steady,
a gelded son of Steady Growth who won four stakes in Canada from 1989-90, including the 1990 British Columbia Derby at Exhibition Park near Vancouver, and Sparrow Lake, a Apalachee filly and two-time stakes winner at Woodbine Racecourse near Toronto in 1988.
Hustle Up traces back to his fourth dam, Barn Swallow, a daughter of Mongo who foaled stakes winner Cadet Corps.
Hustle Up has won 10 of 14 starts, and the $111,000 winner’s share of the $185,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship purse -- the richest of the eight Thoroughbred stakes on the New Mexico Cup program -- increased the gelding’s earnings to $536,143. Hustle
Up has won seven stakes, including the open 1-mile, $100,000 Mine That Bird Stakes at Sunland Park on February 24.
Of Hustle Up’s career bankroll, $252,143 was pocketed during a 2-year-old cam- paign during which he won the $162,905 Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park
and $122,688 Mountain Top Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Blazing Navarone finished second and was followed by Thunder Dome, Shining Source, M G Ms Victory Roll, Mr. Wild Rockete, Mr. Digger, Quite Peace, Dom Strait, Go For A Stroll, and Golly Gee.
Blazing Navarone is a 4-year-old son of Song Of Navarone owned by Barbara M. Coleman. The gelding has won 10 of 21 starts, including seven stakes, and he has earned $531,576.
Thunder Dome races for W.D. Carson, M.H. Carson, and Leach Racing LLC, A 5-year-old son of Dome, the gelding has won nine of 32 outs, including four stakes, and he has banked $554,913.
