  WHY BUY THE COW
Carrol A. Durbin’s Why Buy The Cow raced strongly down the stretch to win the October 27, $145,000 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Ridden by Luis H. Rodriguez for trainer Simon Buechler and sent to post as the
3-1 third choice in the field of seven, Why Buy The Cow covered his 870-yard trip in :46.138, and his margin of victory was 2 1/2 lengths from 22-1 longshot D E Wagons Strawfly. The 4-year-old Heza Motor Scooter gelding earned $87,000 from his first stakes victory.
Why Buy The Cow was bred by Michael Weatherly, and the bay gelding was coming off of a second-place finish in an 870-yard allowance-optional claiming race for New Mexico-breds at Zia Park on October 12. His sire, the Heza Fast Man stallion Heza Motor Scooter, earned $259,682 from 26 starts from 2000-02, and his seven wins included the ’01 El Primero del Ano Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.
Heza Motor Scooter’s most noteworthy progeny include AQHA champions Rylees Boy and All About Larry. The stallion died in May 2015.
Why Buy The Cow is out of Southwest Treasure, a winning daughter of the Dash For Cash stallion Celadon. His second dam, A Real Cup Full, was a winning daughter of the Proud Birdie (TB) stallion Proud Cup (TB).
Why Buy The Cow traces back to his third dam, Real Easy Surprise, a daughter of the Real Easy Jet stallion Realeasy Chick who won the 1989 Prescott Downs Derby in Arizona.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Why Buy The Cow has won three of 10 races -- includ- ing two of three at the 870-yard trip -- and the winner’s share of the New Mexico Cup 870 Championship purse pushed his earnings to $126,261, of which $107,125 has been banked this season. The gelding broke his maiden in a 350-yard dash for state-bred $25,000 maiden claimers at Zia Park on November 17, 2018.
Regards Miracle finished third, 2
3/4 lengths behind Why Buy The Cow. Amsterdams Big Daddy, Dan The Flashman, DM Nate Dog, and 3-2 favorite El Chirrionero completed the order of finish.
D E Wagons Strawfly is a 10-year-old Genuine Strawfly gelding owned by Betty Marshall. D E Wagons Strawfly has won 16 of 63 starts, and his 15 wins in 54 races
at the 870-yard distance include the 2015 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship. The gelding has won five stakes and has banked $617,399 while being campaigned exclu- sively in New Mexico.
A 5-year-old son of the Chicks Beduino stallion Chicks Regard, Regards Miracle races for Joe Dee Brooks, Ted Rushing, Scott Bryant, and Lee Lewis. The gelding has earned $171,605 from 19 outs, in New Mexico and Oklahoma, and his four wins include a three-quarter length victory as the 13-10 favorite in the 2018 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship.
