  FREEDOM FLASH
 Fifth-fastest qualifier Freedom Flash sprinted to a neck victory in the October 27, 440-yard New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Derby (RG3) for state-bred 3-year-olds at Zia Park.
Trained by Jimmy Padgett for owners Pierre and Leslie Amestoy of Albuquerque and Roger K. Beasley, Freedom Flash made his quarter- mile trip in :21.719 under jockey Alonso Rivera. The homebred son of champion First Moonflash earned a 96 speed index and the $94,087 winner’s share of the $196,015.
Freedom Flash’s sire, the First To Flash stal- lion First Moonflash, was the sport’s champion aged stallion in 2009. Racing from 2007-09, First Moonflash earned $969,828 from 25 starts, and his 10 stakes wins included th 2008 and ’09 Championship at Sunland Park (G1).
First Moonflash’s stakes winners include champions Handsome Jack Flash, Flash And Roll, and Foxy Moonflash, and multiple graded stakes winners Too Flash For You and A Passion For Flashn. The stallion died after a battle with laminitis in May 2019. He was 14.
Freedom Flash is out of Mi Camila (TB),
a winning daughter of the Halo (TB) stallion Southern Halo (TB). A 1998 foal, Mi Camila has
produced four winners from four Thoroughbred starters, including multiple stakes winner Bonndaddy’s and stakes winner Mi Domscat.
Freedom Flash’s fourth dam, the win- ning Le Fabuleux mare L’extravagante,
ran third in the 1978 Canadian Oaks at Woodbine Racecourse near Toronto. The gelding traces back to his fifth dam, the multiple stakes winning Northern Dancer mare Fanfreluche. A ’67 foal, Fanfreluche produced five stakes winners, all of whom were half siblings to L’extravagante, includ- ing Grade 1 winner L’Enjoleur and Grade 2 winner D’Accord.
Freedom Flash was coming off of a second- place finish in one of two New Mexico Cup Derby trials on October 6. The gelding has won three of 10 starts and has earned $155,957, of which $136,063 has been banked this sea- son. His resume includes a third-place finish in the September 22, 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Derby (R) at Albuquerque Downs, and he was a finalist in the January 26, 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park.
Jessa Whistlin Dixie finished second and was followed by Tooflashyforyou, fastest qualifier Woodys Copy Cat, June Bug Daddy,
CD Mamas Boy, CD Flash And Fame, Fabs Reflection, Hezajessforsure, and Quemados Royal Moon.
Jessa Whistlin Dixie has banked $62,971 from 14 starts for her owner, Bobby Simmons. A brown daughter of First Moonflash, the filly has won two races, and she was a finalist in this year’s New Mexico State Fair Derby.
Tooflashyforyou races for Bob and
Sissie McClure, who also bred the bay First Moonflash filly. Tooflashyforyou has won four of 15 starts, and the $16,171 third-place share of the New Mexico Cup Derby purse pushed her earnings to $71,263.
