A 25-1 longshot, Yuliana Yanez’s E J’s Gold scored an upset victory in the September 14, 5 1/2-furlong Casey Darnell Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds at Albuquerque Downs.
E J’s Gold defeated 11-1 longshot Forger by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:03.75. Luis Rodriguez rode the 6-year-old gelding for trainer Arturo Chavez.
E J’s Gold was bred by Jimmie Stewart. The gelding is one of 92 winners from 122 starters sired by Quinton’s Gold, a 22-year- old Kentucky-bred son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Carson City. Racing between 2000- 03, Quinton’s Gold earned $234,202 from 27 starts, and his six wins included the 2002 Phoenix Gold Cup at Turf Paradise.
Quinton’s Gold has sired 10 black-type stakes winners and the earners of more than $7.9 million from 12 crops, including multiple stakes winners Lux and That’s Who. The stallion is owned by Clifford B. Graham II, and he stands at Graham Farms at Roswell, New Mexico.
E J’s Gold is also one of two starters pro- duced by Elisabeth Jane, a winning daughter of the Hennessy stallion Golden Ransom.
His third dam, the winning Broadway Forli mare Broadway Broad, was a half sister to Hot Pockets, the winner of the 1987 La Esperanza Futurity at Santa Fe Downs.
E J’s Gold traces back to his fifth dam, You’re Lovely, a daughter of Ambehaving and a half sister to seven stakes winners, includ- ing 1967 Florida Derby winner In Reality and 1980 Flamingo Stakes (G1) winner Superbity.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, E J’s Gold has won eight of 48 starts, and the $48,000 win- ner’s share of the purse from his first stakes score pushed his bankroll to $176,096.
E J’s Gold returned a 52.60 win mutuel and teamed with Forger for a $510.60 ($2) exacta. Thunder Dome, the even-money favorite, was placed third to complete a $1 trifecta payoff of $1,082.20.
Slewacide Squad was placed fourth and was followed by Mr. Mooch, Raider Red, Cherry Way, and Four Star Saint.
Forger is a 6-year-old son of the Forest Wildcat stallion Attila’s Storm campaigned by Tom and Sandy McKenna’s Judge Lanier
Racing. The bay gelding has won eight of 35 outs and has banked $351,825, and his two stakes victories include the 2017 New Mexico Cup Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park
Thunder Dome was placed third after the disqualification of Slewacide Squad from third to fourth. A 5-year-old Dome gelding owned by W.D. Carson Sr., M.H. Carson, and Leach Racing LLC, Thunder Dome has won nine of 30 races and has earned $531,913, and his four stakes victories include last year’s 1-mile, $180,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship (R) at Zia Park.
