Patricia Gonzalez’s Stominado broke his maiden in the October 27, $326,530 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Zia Park.
Prepped by Juan M. Gonzalez, Stominado went 400 yards in :19.630 while aided by a reported 15-mph tail wind, and his margin of victory was a nose from Singin In The Choir, who was clocked in :19.635. Jaime Leos rode the sorrel son of First Moonflash.
Stominado was bred by Dosi and Norma Alvarez, and he was a $57,000 purchase at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding’s sire, the First To Flash stallion First Moonflash, was the sport’s champion aged stallion in 2009. Racing from 2007-09, First Moonflash earned $969,828 from 25 starts, and his 10 stakes wins included the 2008 and ’09 Championship at Sunland Park (G1).
First Moonflash’s stakes winners include champions Handsome Jack Flash, Flash And Roll, and Foxy Moonflash, and multiple graded stakes winners Too Flash For You and A Passion For Flashn. The stallion died after a battle with laminitis in May 2019. He was 14.
Stominado is out of Diamonds N Rainbows, a winning daughter of the Yawls
Rabbit stallion Rabbits Rainbow who ran third in the 2005 Shue Fly Stakes (RG1) at Sunland Park. The gelding is a full brother to two stakes winners, including 2014 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly Foxy Moonflash.
Stominado’s second dam, the Coup de Kas (TB) mare Shines Likea Diamond, won the ’98 KHEY/Y96 Handicap at Sunland Park. A 1996 New Mexico-bred foal, Shines Likea Diamond foaled Rainbows N Diamonds, a Rabbits Rainbow filly who won the ’08 AQHA New Mexico Distaff Challenge (G3) at Ruidoso Downs.
Stominado traces back to his fourth dam, She’s My Doll, a daughter of the Jet Deck stal- lion Jet Smooth who won the 1973 Challenge Cup Maturity at Midland Downs in Texas.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Stominado has earned $160,901 from six starts. The second-fastest qualifier, the gelding was coming off of a second-place finish to fastest qualifier Don Chuy C in the second of seven New Mexico Cup Futurity trials on October 5.
Don Chuy C, the 2-1 favorite, ran third, a half of a length behind Stominado. Boy With Cash, Honky Tonk Daddy, Mi Moonflash, First Neon Moon, Close To Crazy, Amandas Flashy, and Quintessential King completed the order of finish.
Runner-up Singin In The Choir was a $23,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico- Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Racing for Riley Martin, the sorrel son of First Moonflash has won two of seven outs, and the $52,245 runner- up share of the New Mexico Cup Futurity purse pushed his bankroll to $69,780.
Don Chuy C is a brown son of First Moonflash campaigned by Jesus Carrasco. The colt has earned $64,139 from five starts, all in New Mexico, and his three wins include the 400-yard, $50,000 By By JJ Stakes (R)
for New Mexico-bred juveniles at Ruidoso Downs on July 27.
