Attilianno rallied to win the October 27, $145,000 New Mexico Cup Juvenile Championship (R) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings at Zia Park.
Trained by Jimmy Padgett for owners Pierre and Leslie Amestoy of Albuquerque, Attilianno covered 6 furlongs in 1:12.55, and his margin of victory was a head from On A Warpath. Francisco Amparan rode the homebred dark bay or brown son of Attila’s Storm.
Attilianno was coming off of a second- place finish, a neck behind winner Evacuee, in the 6-furlong, $197,000 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs on September 22. The gelding became the 20th official black-type stakes winner sired by Attila’s Storm, a Grade 3-winning 17-year-old Kentucky-bred son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat.
Racing between 2004-07, Attila’s Storm banked $534,983 from 18 starts, and his five wins included the ’07 Toboggan Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct. Attila’s Storm has sired
the earners of more than 11.6 million from nine crops, including multiple stakes winners Thermal, Forger, Tilla Cat, and Little Vidalia.
Attila’s Storm is owned by R.D. Hubbard, and he stands for a $4,000 fee at Fred and
Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Attilianno is also the first starter pro- duced by Applelina, a homebred 9-year-
old winning daughter of the Seattle Slew stallion Survivor Slew and a finalist in the 2012 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding’s second dam, the winning Marquetry mare Appltry, foaled Apt Band, a half-brother to Applelina who ran second in the ’06 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R).
Attilianno’s third dam, the Florida-bred Valid Appeal mare Appealing Sara, won two stakes in New Jersey from 1987-89. The geld- ing traces back to his fourth dam, Lea Moon, a stakes-placed daughter of Nasrullah who foaled five stakes winners, including Duel, the winner of the $100,000 Charles S. Strub Stakes at Santa Anita Park in 1965.
Attilianno has won three of six outs, and the $87,000 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes victory pushed the gelding’s bankroll to $144,061. The gelding was also a finalist in the June 22, 5-furlong Mountain Top Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Franchise Tagged ran third, 2 1/2 lengths behind Attilianno, and was followed by 3-2
favorite Cerveza, Shame On Powers, Deck Humor, Fast Steppin, Road To Heat, Evacuee, Tom T Who, and Jim Edd Who.
A dark bay or brown son of the Indian Charlie stallion Indian Firewater and the winning Attila’s Storm mare New Gold, On A Warpath races for Tracy Haymes. The gelding has earned $50,600 from two outs.
Franchise Tagged has banked $36,180 from three starts for his owners, Ted Rushing, Lee Owens, Beau Farms LLC, Beau Davis, Tim Broadfoot, and Dale Alan Doby. The Attila’s Storm gelding was a $50,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs.
