  SLEWACIDE SQUAD
A 28-1 longshot, Armando Medina’s Slewacide Squad scored an upset victory in the October 27 New Mexico Cup Derby (R) for state-bred 3-year-old Thoroughbreds.
Slewacide Squad covered 6 furlongs in 1:11.54 while defeating 2-5 favorite My Boanerges by a neck. Alejandro Medellin rode the bay gelding for trainer Lee J.. Gutierrez.
Slewacide Squad was bred by Michael Weatherly, and he was stretching out in distance off of his fourth-place finish in the 5 1/2-fur- long, $80,000 Casey Darnell Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs. The gelding became the first official black-type stakes winner from start- ers sired by Slew’s Pot Of Gold.
A winning California-bred son of the Seattle Slew stallion Slew’s Royalty, Slew’s Pot Of Gold earned $25,540 from four starts from 2002-03. The stallion has sired the earners
of more than $538,000, and he is owned by Michael Weatherly and the Estate of Loyal
E. Crownover and stands at Weatherly Horse Farm at Anthony, New Mexico.
Slewacide Squad is one of two winners from as many starters produced by Midnite Rose, an unraced Kentucky-bred daughter
of the Mr. Prospector stallion Miswaki. His third dam, the Cougar II mare Rose’s Record,
won three listed stakes at Arlington Park
in Illinois and Oaklawn Park in Arkansas
in 1989. Rose’s Record foaled two winners, including Wonderful, a stakes-placed daugh- ter of Olympio.
Slewacide Squad’s fourth dam, the unraced Fleet Nasrullah mare In Full Bloom, was a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Faliraki (IRE) and stakes winner Thousandfold.
Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico and unraced at 2, Slewacide Squad has won three of nine starts, and the $87,000 win- ner’s share of the purse from his first stakes score boosted his earnings to $129,415. His record includes a third-place finish, 7 1/4 lengths behind winner My Boanerges, in the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs on July 28.
Slewacide Squad returned a $59 win mutuel and paired with My Boanerges for a $2 exacta payoff of $140. Storm On, a 74-1 longshot, finished third, four lengths behind the winner, to complete a $1 trifecta dividend of $3,607.40.
My Indian Warrior, Diabolical Ruler, No Pasa Nada, Sunscreen, Tyger Tennessee, Southwestern Hope, Amor N Pasion, and Stryder completed the order of finish.
My Boanerges is a homebred chestnut son of the Artax stallion Diabolical owned by Nancy L. Lock. The gelding has won five of seven races and he has earned $153,390, of which $130,640 has been banked from five outs this year. He has won two stakes, includ- ing the May 26, 6 1/2-furlong Dine Stakes (R) at SunRay Park.
A $28,000 yearling purchase at the 2017 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Storm On races for J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas. The bay Attila’s Storm geld- ing has won two of 11 races and has banked $54,376, of which $49,696 has been pocketed from 10 outs this season.
