WALTZING ATTILA
Waltzing Attila, a homebred 5-year-old Attila’s Storm mare racing for Wesley T. Gray and Glenda Gray, was a prompt 4-5 favorite in the October 27, $145,000 New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park. Prepped by Nancy Summers, Waltzing Attila went 6 furlongs in 1:12.31, and her margin of victory was a half of a length from 3-1 second choice Let It Roll. Roimes Chirinos rode the mare, who banked the $87,000 win- ner’s share of the purse.
Waltzing Attila is one of 20 official black- type stakes winners from nine crops sired by Attila’s Storm, a 17-year-old Kentucky-bred son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat. Raced in five states between 2004-07, includ- ing California and New York, Attila’s Storm earned $534,983 from 18 starts, and his five wins included the 2007 Toboggan Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City.
Attila’s Storm has sired the earners of more than $11.5 million from 202 starters, including multiple stakes winners Thermal, Stormin The Jewels, Reaper, and Hush’s Storm. The stallion is owned by R.D. Hubbard and stands for a $4,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Waltzing Attila is also one of two winners from as many starters foaled by Super Sister, an unraced homebred 11-year-old daughter of
the Saint Ballado stallion Your Eminence. The mare’s second dam, the winning Tilt The Odds mare Sister Bolton, is a half sister to Highland’s Best, the winner of the ’07 New Mexico Cup Sprint Championship (R).
Waltzing Attila’s fourth dam, Montchanin Girl, was a winning Northern Jove mare who
ran third in the 1983 Majorette Handicap (R) at Timonium in Maryland. The mare traces back to her sixth dam, When In Rome, a multiple stakes placed daughter of Roman and a half sister to 12-time stakes winner and 1950 American champion 3-year-old filly Next Move.
Waltzing Attila prepped for this race with a 3 1/4-length victory in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance- optional claimer at Zia Park on October 1. Raced exclusively in New Mexico, the mare has won seven of 20 starts, and the winner’s share of the New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship purse pushed her bankroll to $361,863.
Waltzing Attila’s three stakes victories include the 2016 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs, and the 2017 Sierra Starlet Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Waltzing Attila returned a $3.60 win mutuel and teamed with Let It Roll for a $2 exacta payoff of $13. Lady Black Jack, a 61-1 longshot, ran third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Waltzing Attila, to complete a $103.10 ($1) trifecta.

Explosive Spy, I’m A Dancin Who, and Sidewinder Sally completed the order of finish.
